Showering in a van: practical tips

When we think of van life, we imagine freedom, incredible landscapes and nights under the stars… But there is a less glamorous reality: showering in a van.

During our first road trips, this was a real headache. Between improvisations, fits of laughter, and moments of utter confusion, we tried all sorts of solutions before finally finding what worked for us. Today, we're sharing our experiences, anecdotes, and the solutions and accessories that truly changed our lives.

Our first van shower mishaps

Like many travellers, we quickly discovered that taking a shower in a van is a challenge in itself.

• Icy beach showers : At first, we tried the public showers on the beaches. But during our road trip in Spain, due to water restrictions, some only worked… for feet. The result: squatting in the sand, one of us holding the shower on while the other tried, with varying degrees of success, to wash their hair on all fours, under the amused gaze of passersby. A truly lonely moment that we still remember very well!

• The makeshift bottle shower : our first "real" showers took place in a parking lot. With the back doors open for a modicum of privacy, we took turns pouring water bottles over each other's backs. A rudimentary solution, but one that remains a vivid memory of our early days.

• The curtain of hell : we also tried installing a curtain attached to the rear doors of the van. In theory, it was a good idea. In practice, the curtain stuck to our skin as soon as it got wet and flew away at the slightest breeze, making any privacy impossible. Needless to say, we quickly abandoned this option.

• Temporary solutions Sometimes we took advantage of freezing showers in beach car parks, or paid for access to campsites just to use their facilities. But in the long run, it was neither practical nor economical.

These experiences have taught us one thing: without suitable equipment, showering in a van quickly becomes a real obstacle course.

Why is showering such a challenge in van life?

Van life is above all about the freedom to travel at your own pace. But this freedom comes with very real constraints:

• Water management : every liter is precious and must be used wisely.

• Lack of privacy : washing outside often attracts attention, which can be uncomfortable.

• Weather conditions : rain, wind, cold… an impromptu shower can quickly turn into a nightmare.

That's why having a reliable portable shower solution quickly became a priority for us.

Traveling by van also made us realize the value of water. When every liter counts, you quickly learn not to waste it.

Now even at home we pay much more attention to our consumption.

The solutions we tested!

Throughout our travels, we experimented with several ways to shower in a van. Some were practical, others much less so, but each allowed us to learn and better understand our needs.

Portable showers: These are very practical for taking a quick shower, wherever you are. They allow you to easily control the amount of water used and are often lightweight and easy to carry. They are ideal for nomadic travelers or those who want to remain self-sufficient without depending on campsites or public water points.

Shower cabins: These offer privacy and comfort. They can be set up quickly and create a space protected from the wind and prying eyes, which is very useful when parked in busy areas or when you want to shower in peace and quiet. Some cabins are more spacious and perfect for extended stays, while others are compact and suitable for frequent travelers.

These options allow you to take a shower anywhere, anytime, and with minimal equipment.

Each of these solutions has its advantages depending on the type of trip, the weather, and your water supply. The key is to find the system that suits your pace and the constraints you face on the road.

Our practical tips for successful showers in a van.

Over time (and a few mishaps), we have learned to make showering in the van simpler and more enjoyable.

Here are our tips:

• Always carry wipes : they remain essential in a van. In case of a dead battery, lack of water, or simply for a quick wash, they're a lifesaver.

• Monitor water consumption : always keep an eye on the amount of water remaining to avoid unpleasant surprises (finding yourself soapy without water is never pleasant).

• Optimize your installation : a small absorbent mat in front of the shower cubicle is very practical.

Take your time to test Every vanlifer has their own habits. The important thing is to find the solution that best suits your type of road trip.

Conclusion: an essential solution and duo for stress-free travel

Looking back, we realize how much having a portable shower and a suitable cabin changes daily life in a van. This duo is now, for us, the essential solution for combining comfort, independence, and privacy.

Every traveler has different needs: some will prefer a solar shower for its simplicity, others will opt for a pump with a tank for added convenience, or even a shower cabin if they are staying in the same place for several days. The key is to find the combination that suits your pace and habits.
